Whether you're celebrating the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, at your favorite Boston bar or from the comfort of your home, the necessary cocktail to have in hand is the mint julep. While history is not clear on exactly why the mint julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, it's been the go-to beverage for more than a century. At our cocktail bar Noir, we offer it around this time of year as a nod to this historic event but also because it's the perfect refreshing cocktail to kick off patio season!

Try out your own mint julep at home:

1 scant ounce minted simple syrup

2 cups crushed ice

2 ounces bourbon

Fresh mint sprig, for garnish 

Add the ice to your cup first (in a perfect world a silver julep cup), then the simple syrup and bourbon. Stir with a spoon until the glass is frosted. Garnish with fresh mint. Cheers! May the best horse win.
